Name, Rank, and Serial Number

Hello, my name is Scott Milam and I’m going to take a little of your time and tell you about myself. I am from Perryville, MO, born and raised, and is currently where I reside. I attend classes at our Higher Education Center where I am pursuing a degree in Directing in the Visual Arts. On the side I hope to write a novel and have it published one day and hopefully, possibly have an opportunity to direct the movie version of one of my books. This brings my quiet life with my lovely wife to somewhat of a nutshell conclusion.
Then again, my life is not always as quiet as I would like to believe it is. Two months ago, my wife brought me home a bit of news that made my night, it could have made my week, if it had gotten the chance to last that long. She came home and put a pregnancy test with a little pink plus on it in my hand. The first thought that crossed my mind was, “Make sure you look happy, she will remember your face until the day you die.” The next day brought another positive test, this one from a properly licensed physician, and our joy overflowed. Unfortunately, a visit to a maternity clinic the very next day revealed it to be a molar pregnancy and that was a hard blow for us. With time and reflection we came to peace with it, looked at the brighter side of things, and we will try again.

To wrap up, something I hope to take away from this class is simply a level of accreditation. I hope this class has a lot to teach me but the simple fact is that I want to be taken seriously as a writer. It seems one of the only ways to do that if you can manage it at all, is to at least have a college education. Not trying to offend anyone, but I heard a joke once that sums up my fears and in essence, my point I am trying to make, “what is the difference between a writer and a park bench… a park bench can support a family.”
